Sleep is one of the most important building blocks of a child’s physical and mental development, yet every parent knows that getting kids to sleep well can be challenging at times! From infancy through the teenage years, children’s sleep needs change as they grow. Understanding these needs and establishing healthy sleep habits can make a big difference in their focus, mood, and overall well-being. Here are some tips for healthy sleep habits for your children!

Infants and toddlers will need around 12-15 hours of sleep each night. It is normal for them to need frequent naps throughout the day as well. As they grow older and reach preschool age they start to need fewer naps throughout the day. It is important at this age to begin establishing normal nighttime routines. A predictable bedtime each night and forming good habits like brushing teeth and bath time are important things to implement. As children begin reaching school age and pre-teen years the sleep they require each night lessens slightly to around 8-10 each night. At this age, they should have healthy sleep habits in place to ensure that they are ready for early mornings and the activities that the school day requires. Teenagers often struggle to balance healthy sleep patterns due to schoolwork, extracurricular activities such as sports, and other social events. Help your teen develop a consistent sleep schedule and avoid caffeine in the evenings. Encourage a wind-down routine that limits phone or computer use before bed, as screen time before bed can interfere with their ability to fall asleep.
Overall, implementing good sleep habits from a young age can instill a proper nighttime routine and can set up children for better focus and success in school and other interests/activities. If your child is struggling with sleep, contact your pediatrician for advice!
