Is your child a picky eater? Picky eating can be a frustrating and stressful challenge many parents face with their children but it is common and typically a normal part of childhood. With patience and persistence, most children will begin to expand their palate over time. Here are some tips to help parents handle the picky eating phase.

Always create a positive environment at mealtimes. It can be easy to let frustrations get in the way when your child refuses to eat certain foods. Children can pick up on this easily and it can start to cause mealtimes to be stressful for them. Remember to be patient but consistent and persistent with your efforts. Keep mealtimes focused on being together as family/friends rather than how much or what your child is eating. Parents and caregivers are a child's number one role model, so lead by example and show them that you enjoy trying new foods. Always offer multiple choices with new foods. This will make your child feel like they have some control over the situation and take some of the stress away. For example, offer multiple options for side items such as carrots or broccoli.

It may take your child being offered a new food up to 15 times or more before they accept it. Try not to be discouraged and give up after they've rejected it the first handful of times. Avoid only offering new foods, always include some of their favorites or options. Avoid the urge to make or buy separate meals that you know your child will eat. Instead, aim to find them foods or options on the menu with what/where the rest of the family is eating.

Picky eating is more of a phase in childhood rather than a permanent condition. Always praise your child with every win, no matter how big or small! With a positive and consistent effort, you can help your child form a healthier relationship with food.
