Many illnesses are spreading and circulating right now. Most of our children are experiencing symptoms, including fever, cough, and congestion. Below are some tips on how you can naturally strengthen your child's immune system to help hopefully prevent them from getting sick.

1. Diet: A healthy and well-balanced diet is essential for immune support. Many foods are rich in different minerals and nutrients that help immunity naturally. Be sure to include citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and limes. Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and collard greens have vitamins A, C, and other antioxidants. Snacks like yogurt are rich in probiotics which help support a healthy gut. Most of our immune system lives in our gut, so keeping a balanced environment helps enhance immune function by stimulating the production of antibodies and regulating inflammatory responses.

2. Sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for a healthy immune system. Children need between 9-12 hours of sleep per night depending on their age. Establish a bedtime routine with calming activities like limited screen time, reading, or a warm bath to promote restful sleep.

3. Physical Activity: Daily exercise helps boost circulation and strengthen the immune system. Bundle up and let your kids play outside with parents, siblings, or friends. Or if it's too cold to enjoy being outside, find ways to encourage and implement physical activity through indoor activities.

4. Hydrate: Hydration keeps the body functioning optimally. Offer water, herbal teas, or warm soups. Using a humidifier can also help maintain moisture in the air, preventing dry nasal membranes that can make it easier for germs to enter.

5. Supplements and Vitamins: Consider starting immune-supporting supplements during this time. Examples of these include vitamin D, vitamin C, zinc, and elderberry. Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system, vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps your immune system fight off infections, zinc plays a role in immune system development as well as fighting off infections, and elderberry has known antiviral properties and can help fight off respiratory infections. These vitamins/supplements may be needed especially if your child has limited exposure to sunlight or a restricted diet. There are many other vitamins and supplements that can be added to your child's daily regimen that you can discuss with your pediatrician. Always consult your pediatrician before introducing new supplements.

6. Hygiene: Teach your child proper handwashing techniques using soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Regular handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs.

Implementing these tips above into your child's daily life can affect their health in a positive way. These strategies will help boost your child's immunity and help them fight off the many circulating illnesses we are seeing right now. Remember if your child does start showing symptoms that are not improving or are continuing to worsen, have them evaluated by their pediatrician!
