As we prepare for the New Year this week, it is the perfect time to reflect on our family routines and set intentions for a healthier and happier lifestyle. Many individuals set personal New Year's resolutions, and setting goals for your family as a whole shouldn't be forgotten! For parents, the start of a new year offers a perfect opportunity to encourage your little ones to adopt habits that promote their health and wellness. Here are a few family-friendly ideas for consideration:

1. Prioritize Family Time

Shared meals foster connection and teach kids about balanced nutrition. Make a goal to enjoy at least one meal a day together. Try planning more family trips, activities, and seasonal events that promote their connection and relationship to you. Discover hobbies you can enjoy together, such as playing music, enjoying a sport, or learning a new skill.

2. Encourage Physical Activity

Active play is essential for their growing bodies. Many children are involved in organized sports and clubs, but even if they are it is still important to encourage physical activity. This can be as simple as making chores around the house more fun and active, or planning family activities on the weekend that require everyone to be more physical, such as a hike or going to the park. Provide toys and equipment like balls, jump ropes, or hula hoops. Find something that aligns with your child's interest to help encourage them to be more active.

3. Create a Bedtime Routine

Good sleep fuels healthy growth and learning. Work on consistent bedtime routines to help regulate their internal clock. Enjoy calming activities before bedtime to help them wind down from the day. An example of this can be reading a book or storytelling. Avoid heavy meals and sugary foods/drinks before bedtime, and instead offer light snacks if they are hungry. By incorporating these few habits into your child’s nightly routine, you can help them develop a positive relationship with sleep that supports their growth and overall well-being.

4. Reduce Screentime

Excessive screen time often replaces physical activity, contributing to weight gain and associated health issues. Face-to-face interactions help children develop communication, empathy, and social problem-solving skills. Reduced screen time allows more opportunities for meaningful family interactions and activities. Set achievable limits on screen use and encourage activity with family and friends.

5. Make Checkups a Priority

Start the year with a visit to your child’s pediatrician, dentist, or eye doctor if they are behind on any of their routine checkups. Regular checkups ensure they are on track with their growth milestones, immunizations if they are desired, and their overall health and well-being!

As we step into 2025, remember that consistent changes can lead to life-long habits that will promote not only your health and wellness but your child's as well. Happy New Year!
