Your baby getting their first tooth is an exciting milestone—but teething can be tough for both babies and parents. Most babies start teething around 6 months, though it can happen anywhere between the ages of 4- 12 months of age.

Common teething symptoms include:

• Drooling (and lots of it!)

• Chewing on hands, toys, or anything in sight

• Overall fussiness or irritability

• Mild temperature elevation (rectal temperatures for children under 1 year old are most accurate)

• Swollen or sensitive gums

• Looser stools

What’s not normal:

A high fever (anything above 100.4F), rash all over the body, congestion are not considered typical teething symptoms. If your baby has any of this, it may be best to check with their pediatrician.

How to help:

• Offer cold teeth toys

• Gently massage their gums with a clean finger

• Let them chew on a chilled washcloth

• For older babies, cold purees or yogurt can help

Remember while teething can lead to a fussy and uncomfortable baby, it is only temporary. If you have questions or concerns regarding symptoms, taking a rectal temperature, or anything else, consult with the pediatrician!
